∴ Update February 2021
Persistent rumors indicated that a Covid-19 test would be requested for visa extensions. As of 15 February, this type of document was NOT requested.
You have arrived in Thailand!
You have obtained your long-term O or OA visa.
If you have a non-immigrant O visa, you have 90 days to extend its validity by one year, that is 365 days for the OA visa.
Obtaining the initial O or OA visa in your country is described in the first article on the subject.
Ok, but how to extend the validity of your visa?
You do not have to renew your visa, you simply have to extend the validity of your initial visa.
To do this, you must go to the nearest immigration office with all the requested documents.
I advise you to start your procedures 1 month before your visa expires.
Some documents, such as a one-year bank statement, may require a week’s delay. Anyway even if you get an extension before the end of the current extension, the new one-year extension will start at the end of your current extension.
The important points
Before seeing the documents and the procedure necessary for the extension, a summary of the important points:
- Finance:
- You must have a minimum amount of 800’00 THB in an account of a Thaibank, for at least 2 months for the 1st extension, 3 months for the following extensions.
For the 2nd and subsequent extensions, you will also have to prove that the 800,000 THB were present 3 months after obtaining the previous extension; - OR be able to prove a retirement pension of at least THB 65,000 per month;
- OR a mix of both as long as you can prove 800,000 THB per year in total. The additional capital to your pension must be in an account of a Thai bank.
- You must have a minimum amount of 800’00 THB in an account of a Thaibank, for at least 2 months for the 1st extension, 3 months for the following extensions.
♦ Proof of your income is the most important point taken into account during your extension!
Avoid staying in Thailand after the expiration of your visa. You risk a fine, expulsion or even a ban from the country.
If you already have a retirement pension
You’ve probably validated your pension income with an official document in your home country. This document should also be valid for the extension of your visa in Thailand.
In this case, the O and OA visas are almost identical when they are extended, except for compulsory health insurance for the OA visa.
If, like me, you don’t have a retirement pension yet
You will have to prove that you have 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account for 2 months at the first visa extension, 3 months at the following extensions.
If you have an O visa valid for 90 days, this is going to be very short. Possible but complicated, that’s why in my first article on the subject, I advised you rather the OA visa as an initial visa.
The necessary documents
Before going to the nearest immigration office, you must make sure that you have all the requested documents.
You can check the documents necessary for your extension on the immigration site.
◊ The immigration site https://www.immigration.go.th/ is partially translated into English. You will often need to use your browser for translation.

Tips
Forms TM.7 and TM.8 can be loaded as a PDF from the immigration download page.
You will be able to fill them out, modify and print them before your visit, and even reuse them for your subsequent requests.
If you have a printer / scanner, you can prepare your complete file at home.
Note that all your photocopies must be signed.
Getting to immigration
You must go personally to the nearest immigration office.
You cannot delegate your visit, however you can be assisted by a translator or a lawyer for example.
I currently live in Bangkok, so I’m going to tell you about my experience at the immigration office of the Government Complex in Bangkok.
Opening hours
8:30 – 12:00
13:00 – 16:30
Registration to the waiting queue until 15:30
Building B
This building, located north of Bangkok, is not very easy to access.
For a visa extension and obtaining a re-entry permit, allow a large half-day. As the ticket counter closes at 3:30 PM, go in the morning preferably.
Note that immigration office closes between 12 and 13h. The complex remains open so you can take advantage of this moment to eat in one of the many restaurants in the basement.
To get there, you will need to take the metro and a taxi.
The easiest way is to get out of the metro at Sena Nikhom station on the BTS Sukhumvit line, it is not the closest station to the building, but there is a taxi stand.
The taxi price varies between 130 and 200 THB depending on traffic. If you are in the traffic jam hours, ask the driver to take the “Toll speedway”, it is much faster and it only costs a few tens of baht more.
Also specify that this is building B.
Returning from immigration
Pay attention to your return time, after 5 pm no more taxis!
You will be in the middle of nowhere and you will have no other choice than to take a motorbike taxi!
The Bangkok Government Complex
This building is absolutely amazing. It is the flagship of the administration in Bangkok.
From the outside, it looks like a big football stadium. Also inside. The administrative offices are on the sides, 7-8 floors high, with a central space the size of a football field. The complex even hosts a day market!
The lower floor has a dozen restaurants, various shops, bank branches (the main ones are present) and photocopy / photo shops. I do not recommend copy shops, the prices are low but the staff is not very friendly – but it can help out if needed.
How to proceed
The first thing to do is to get a queue ticket at the immigration office.
This ticket also tells you the number of people in front of you. Note that the counter to obtain this ticket closes at 15:30!
Immigration office is on the ground floor. The information desk at the entrance will give you information if necessary.
If you have already prepared your file, you can go directly to the immigration office’s main room and go to the ticket counter. Otherwise go to the immigration office’s information desk which will give you the forms you need: TM.7 and TM.8
1- TM.7 Visa extension
You need your TM.7 visa extension to obtain a re-entry permit that applies to it.
So start by requesting your ticket for TM.7.
When you have your queue ticket, take a look at the billboards to see the current queue position.
◊ You will probably have a good hour and a half for a coffee or a bite to eat in one of the many restaurants in the basement.
The immigration office is glazed, so you can take a look from time to time at the advance of the queue without entering the office.
When there are something like ten people left in front of you, enter the office and wait for your turn in the waiting area.
◊ Take the opportunity to request your waiting list ticket for TM.8 this time.
Please note: on my last visit, the counter refused to give me a ticket before actually having my extension.
- When called, you should go to the office indicated on the notice board, usually 27. In this first “sorting” office, a person will check that you have all the requested documents.
- If everything is OK, you will be given a cubicle number to continue the procedure
- Wait again for your ticket number to be called and go to the indicated cubicle.
There you will be dealing with an immigration officer.
The agents I spoke to had a sufficient level of English for us to understand each other.
The most important point is your income. The period during which your funds must be present in your Thai account is eliminatory. - If all goes well, you will then have to wait for your passport to be returned to you with its new extension.
2- TM.8 Reentry permit
As its name suggests, this permit allows you to re-enter Thailand when you leave the kingdom during the validity of your visa.
♦ ATTENTION ! Without this permit, an exit from Thailand cancels your visa and its extension! You will have to start the full visa process all over again!
You have the choice between buying a single or multiple entries. I recommend multiple reentry, you will be safe for a year from an oversight with very annoying consequences.
As before, once your waiting ticket is obtained, you wait for your turn.
Please note that the waiting list scrolls faster than for the extension of stay.
Obtaining the permit is a quick formality if your visa extension is OK.
The prices
Visa extension: 1’900 THB
Reentry permit (multiple): 3’800 THB
Reentry permit (unique): 1’000 THB
Voilà! You can legally stay one more year in Thailand!
The procedure for the annual extension of the visa is obviously legitimate and rather well organized.
On the other hand, you will then have to go through other procedures (90 days report, TM.30) which, if they are depicted as simple, are a little absurd.
But we will talk about that it in another post!
